Description:

 A shrub up to 2m high. Leaves abruptly bipinnate, up to 45 cm long; pinnae 6-12 pairs, up to 7-9cm long; leaflets oblong, oblique at the base, emarginate at the apex with the midrib produced as a short mucro. Flowers red or golden red.

Habitat: Deciduous forests.

Distribution: Widely cultivated or escaped throughout world tropics.

Uses: It is used for its ornamental value in landscaping and gardens, and in traditional medicine for various ailments. Fruits rich in tannins; flowers yield a dye. Infusion of the flowers used as a pectoral and febrifuge; bark as an abortifacient. Leaves purgative, tonic, and emmenagogue.
